Research Area: Glaucoma

Clinical Research Interests: Washington University Clinical Site Primary Investigator for the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study, a multicenter randomized clinical trial to determine the safety and efficacy of ocular hypotensive medication in delaying or preventing the onset of glaucoma in individuals with elevated intraocular pressure. Other current projects include assessment of optic nerve imaging in glaucoma using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and comparison of the ExPRESS glaucoma mini-shunt to standard trabeculectomy.

Basic Research Interests: Primary focus is on validation of in vivo imaging of apoptosis in retinal ganglion cells in rodent models of glaucoma using an activatable peptide probe. This project is in collaboration with Dr. David Piwnica-Worms of the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University. A secondary project focuses on evaluation of knockout mouse mutants with spontaneous glaucoma.

Projects have been funded by a Horncrest Foundation Physician-Scientist Award, a Research to Prevent Blindness Career Development Award, an American Glaucoma Society Novartis Ophthalmics Research Fellowship in Glaucoma, a Pharmacia Glaucoma Fellows Research Grant, and a National Eye Institute R21 grant.
