Biostatistical design of clinical studies
Dr. Gordon serves as director of the department Biostatistics Core Module. An important mission of the Biostatistics Core is to conduct pilot studies to provide a sound scientific foundation for larger, definitive studies.
Dr. Gordon is director of the Coordinating Center for the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study, a randomized clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute to evaluate the safety and efficacy of medication treatment in preventing glaucoma in individuals with ocular hypertension. The study involves 35 participating clinics nationally and over 1, 600 participants with ocular hypertension.
In addition, Dr. Gordon is the director of the Coordinating Center for the Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus Study, the first multi-center study funded by the National Eye Institute in Optometry. This observational study involves 16 participating clinics nationally and tracks the prognosis of over 1,200 patients diagnosed with keratoconus.
Dr. Gordon has served on numerous scientific review panels for the National Institutes of Health. She served as a member of the board for the Baltimore Eye Study in Maryland and the Retinitis Pigmentosa Study at Massachusetts eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Beaver Dam Eye Study in Wisconsin and chairman of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board for the Prism Adaptation Multi-Center Randomized Trial. She has authored more than 184 publications.
Her research interests include research study design, patient compliance and measurement reliability. Her research also has investigated the impact of compliance on the cost and design of clinical studies.
