Incoming Resident: Jessica Sun, MD
Where are you from?
Montreal, Canada and Potomac, Maryland
Where did you attend Medical School?
Harvard Medical School
Favorite memory of Medical School?
Going on long walks and cooking together with my classmates during COVID.
Favorite memory of your intern residency year?
Not so much a specific memory, but getting to build friendships with my co-residents and see each other in and out of the hospital has really made the long hours of residency not only survivable, but enjoyable. During one of our class’s get-togethers, we played an epic round of Mario Party Jamboree, and I was sore the next day from how much I laughed and screamed.
Why did you choose Ophthalmology?
I’ve always been a very visual person and there’s no specialty as visual as Ophthalmology! I also love the ‘craft’ aspect of Ophthalmology, both in terms of the surgeries that we perform to restore our patients’ vision and the exam maneuvers we hone to diagnose our patients.
Why did you choose WashU Medicine?
There is a huge diversity of patients and diseases that we get to take care of here at WashU. It is an enormous hospital system, but despite its size, our department is a true family. Everyone is incredibly warm and eager to teach.
What do you like most about St. Louis?
St. Louis is a great city to be a resident; everything is super convenient, and there are lots of free events. On my days off, I like to bird-watch and bike with my partner in Forest Park, meet up with friends in the Central West End, and explore St. Louis’s surprisingly diverse food scene.
What are you most looking forward to during your residency?
Learning from my co-residents, seniors, and faculty, as well as passing it forward to juniors and medical students.
What specialty are you most interested in?
I’m still undifferentiated and figuring it out. Tune in later to find out!
