Staff Optometrist, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

Before pursuing optometry, Lyss worked as a chemist—but soon realized he wanted a career that allowed him to connect more directly with people. “I longed to work more with people in my day-to-day life,” he said. “I value how much eye care providers get to spend time with and interact with patients. Sometimes you get to meet some really interesting people!”

Lyss developed a deep interest in ocular disease during his residency at the St. Louis VA Medical Center, where he gained hands-on experience treating a wide range of patients. He sees medical optometry as the future of the profession and is excited to be part of that growing field.

“It’s rewarding and a big responsibility when patients really learn to trust and value you as a doctor. I think about that every day to motivate me to do my best,”

Among his clinical interests, he is especially passionate about learning more about age-related macular degeneration (AMD). His goal is to ensure patients feel both comfortable and confident in his care. “I want patients to truly feel comfortable in my care with the knowledge that I will always go the extra mile for them,” he shared.

Outside of the clinic, Lyss enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, staying active with running and exercise when time allows. A fun fact patients may be surprised to learn? He has a twin brother—also in healthcare. “He’s a dentist and has the same number of kids as me, so there are some similarities!”

The department is excited to welcome Alexander Lyss, OD and looks forward to the expertise and warmth he will bring to our patients and community.
