In Remembrance of Anjali Bhorade, MD

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Anjali Bhorade, a distinguished ophthalmologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Her contributions to the field of ophthalmology and her compassionate care for her patients have left an indelible mark on the medical community.

Education & Experience

Dr. Bhorade’s journey in medicine was marked by dedication, excellence, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology, magna cum laude, from Cornell University. She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, where she also completed her residency in ophthalmology from 2000 to 2003. She pursued her internship at Loyola Medicine MacNeal Hospital in the transitional year program from 1999 to 2000. Dr. Bhorade further specialized in glaucoma with a fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.

Dr. Bhorade joined the faculty at Washington University in 2004, where she made significant contributions both as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and as a dedicated researcher. She completed a Masters in Clinical Investigation, showcasing her commitment to advancing medical research.

Professional Achievements

Dr. Bhorade’s research interests focused on evaluating and improving visual function and quality of life for glaucoma patients. Her work, supported by the NIH, included evaluating at-risk driving errors in glaucoma patients. Over her career, she received numerous accolades, including the American Glaucoma Society (AGS) Young and Mid-Career Clinician Scientist Awards, the NEI K23 award, and the Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging award, as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award.

She was actively involved in significant clinical research projects, such as the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study and the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research group. She contributed to the Basic and Clinical Science Course series and served as a reviewer for the NEI Special Emphasis Panel and the AGS Research Review Committee. Dr. Bhorade held numerous leadership positions, including serving on the board of directors for the AGS. She was the director of the glaucoma fellowship and co-director of the Clinical Research Committee at Washington University.

A Compassionate Clinician and Mentor

Dr. Bhorade was known not only for her clinical skills but also for her warmth and empathy. Her patients often spoke of her ability to listen, understand, and provide the highest level of care. She treated each patient with the utmost respect and dignity, ensuring they felt supported and cared for during their treatment journey.

As a dedicated educator, she inspired and mentored numerous medical students, ophthalmology residents, fellows, and students in the Occupational Therapy program. Her colleagues remember her as a brilliant mind who was always willing to share her knowledge and expertise.

Dr. Anjali Bhorade passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Bhorade was a member of our department for 20 years, leaving a lasting legacy through her clinical excellence, research contributions, and compassionate patient care. Her dedication to improving the lives of glaucoma patients and her impact on the field of ophthalmology will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
