WashU Medicine at AAO 2024

The 2024 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Conference in Chicago brought together leading experts in eye care to explore the latest advancements in the field. WashU Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences actively participated, contributing to important discussions on new technologies and sharing insights on new technology, surgical techniques, and patient care.

Contributions from WashU Medicine at AAO 2024

Throughout the conference, faculty members from WashU Medicine Ophthalmology delivered impactful presentations across a range of topics. Their contributions highlighted the department’s leadership in ophthalmology research and clinical care, continuing to drive innovation in areas such as corneal transplantation, retinal disease treatment, and complex cataract surgeries.

New LASIK Technology

Dr. Wexler from WashU Medicine LASIK Surgery Center recently joined other top experts in refractive surgery for a roundtable discussion. They focused on the upcoming release of an advanced laser system expected to gain FDA approval this winter. This new technology is designed to improve precision and outcomes in surgeries like LASIK and PRK, and it’s set to make a significant impact on the field.

Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Day

Dr. Steven Couch led the Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Day at the 2024 AAO Conference, titled Oculofacial Plastic Surgery 2024: Different Insights in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery—Focusing on the Nuances. This program provided an in-depth look into diagnosing and managing oculofacial plastic conditions involving the orbit, eyelid, and lacrimal system.

Dr. Gregg T. Lueder and alum Susan M. Culican, MD, PhD, joined the expert panel at the Academy Café: Pediatric Ophthalmology session. This unique gathering invited attendees to enjoy free coffee and engage in lively, casual discussions on pediatric ophthalmology and other ophthalmologic topics. Throughout the meeting, eight moderated sessions with expert panels were held, where attendees could use their smartphones or laptops to text questions directly to the panel for real-time insights and answers.

Pediatric Ophthalmology Emergencies

Dr. Andrew R. Lee presented on Ophthalmic Emergencies – Pediatric Ophthalmology Emergencies, addressing the critical need for physicians to stay informed on effectively managing urgent cases amid their busy schedules. This symposium provided attendees with practical guidance from top experts on diagnosing and treating conditions that could threaten vision or even be life-threatening, equipping physicians with essential, up-to-date strategies for swift and effective patient care.

WashU Medicine Alumni Reception

In addition to the educational sessions, WashU Medicine Ophthalmology hosted a special Alumni Reception during the AAO conference, providing an opportunity for alumni to reconnect and celebrate the ongoing achievements of the department. This gathering allowed former students and faculty members to network, discuss their work in ophthalmology, and share insights on the latest trends in the field. Events like these foster a sense of community and collaboration, reinforcing the university’s commitment to advancing eye care through both education and research.

ASOPRS Research Award

A special highlight of the conference was the recognition of Washington University’s Drs. Custer and Maamari, who were honored with the 2024 ASOPRS Research Award. Their groundbreaking research, published in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, introduced the Hatchet Flap technique for eyelid and midfacial reconstruction. This innovative approach, demonstrated in 70 cases, has made significant advancements in both the cosmetic and functional outcomes of reconstructive surgeries. The award was presented during the ASOPRS Fall Meeting, marking a proud moment for Washington University’s contributions to ophthalmic research.
