WashU Medicine Surgical Simulation Lab Recognized with 2026 Lab Design Award

The WashU Medicine John F. Hardesty, MD Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is celebrating national recognition for its innovative surgical simulation lab, which recently received a 2026 Lab Design Award for user engagement. Designed in partnership with HKW Architects, the space was recognized for its collaborative, learner-centered design that supports advanced surgical training and education. The award highlights how thoughtful design can directly enhance medical education and improve the training environment for future ophthalmic surgeons.

The surgical simulation lab was created to provide residents and trainees with hands-on experience in a realistic, technology-driven setting before entering the operating room. By integrating feedback from faculty, learners, and clinical teams throughout the planning process, the space was intentionally built to support innovation, efficiency, and skill development. The recognition reflects WashU Medicine’s continued investment in advancing surgical education and preparing physicians to deliver the highest level of patient care.

The project was recently featured in Lab Design News, which highlighted the impact of user-driven collaboration in shaping the award-winning space. The feature underscores the department’s commitment to combining education, technology, and patient-centered innovation to strengthen ophthalmic training for years to come.
