WashU Medicine John F. Hardesty, MD Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is proud to announce that Steven M. Couch, MD, FACS, has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Dean’s Impact Award.

Couch is a highly respected orbital and oculofacial plastic surgeon. His dedication to excellence and patient-centered care embodies the spirit of this honor. As one of the highest-volume orbital surgeons in the region, he treats a wide range of complex conditions, including orbital tumors, trauma, thyroid eye disease, and advanced reconstructive cases.

Dr. Steven Couch has had a profound and lasting impact on WashU Medicine by expanding what is possible for our patients, elevating the national stature of our department, and training the next generation of leaders in ophthalmic surgery and innovation.

Throughout his career, Couch has led groundbreaking innovations. Some of these innovations are corneal neurotization and Transorbital Neuroendoscopic Surgery (TONES), expanding treatment possibilities and improving outcomes for patients in the St. Louis region and beyond. His expertise draws patients from across the country. This is a testament not only to his surgical skill but also to his compassionate approach to care.

I’ve been fortunate to take on roles at WashU Medicine that focus on patient safety and quality, not just within our department but across the hospital. Whether through participating in national medical organizations, research, clinical trials, or mentoring ASOPRS fellows, my goal has always been to make a lasting impact on patient care and the future of our field. Excellence is not just a moment in the clinic or operating room; it is the culture we try to build and teach for the next generation.
