We are thrilled to announce Science in Focus: Art Beyond the Microscope, a science as art competition!
We invite all vision science researchers to participate in this unique competition, where science and art intersect to reveal the beauty within scientific research.
Purpose and Goals
Our goal is to celebrate the beauty of science and engage the community in its impact. This competition encourages researchers to share their work through an artistic lens, highlighting the aesthetic aspects of their scientific endeavors.
Eligibility
- Open to all vision science researchers.
- Multiple submissions are permitted and encouraged.
- Submissions by faculty are welcome but will not be considered for an award.
Categories and Mediums
- Preferred Medium: High-resolution digital images
- Non-Digital Submissions: If interested in submitting art that is not digital, please contact Jenna Krizan at krizanj@wustl.edu.
Submission Guidelines
Each submission requires:
- Your high-resolution scientific image: Images should be related to vision science.
- Image Title
- Brief Image Description: This description should be 1-2 sentences and aimed at a scientific audience.
- Brief Impact Statement: This description should be 20-25 words and aimed at a general audience.
All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Deadline extended until Friday, August 23, 2024
Judging Criteria and Event Details
- Finalist Selection: The DOVS Research Retreat Committee will select the finalists for the competition.
- Display Location: Art will be displayed during the poster session of the 2024 DOVS Research Retreat on Friday, September 6, 2024.
- Voting:
- In-person voting will be available during the poster session.
- Virtual voting will be available on our social media pages (Twitter and Facebook) in the week leading up to the retreat.
- Science in Focus: Art beyond the Microscope Award:
- The winner, chosen by popular vote, will be announced during the afternoon festivities at Shaw Park.
- $100 cash award to the popular choice winner.
- Recognition: Submissions may be featured on department websites, promotional materials, etc.
By showcasing the stunning visuals and intricate details of scientific research, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the intersection of science and art. We look forward to your participation and can’t wait to see the incredible artworks you create!
