Department introduces specialized EyePrint contact lens technology

WashU Medicine John F. Hardesty, MD Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is expanding its specialty contact lens services with EyePrint. This innovative technology creates highly customized contact lenses designed to match the unique shape of a patient’s eye. With this new service, WashU Medicine is now one of only four providers in Missouri offering EyePrint technology.

The EyePrint process begins with a brief impression of the eye using an FDA-approved compound to capture its unique contours and irregularities. The impression is then sent to EyePrint Prosthetics, where it is scanned to create a detailed 3D model. Using specialized design software, a custom contact lens is developed to match the eye’s surface before being manufactured in a specialized lab.

This allows patients with ocular disease, complicated optics, and severely irregular ocular surfaces to experience the vision, comfort, and ocular health benefits of customized contact lenses.
