Rajendra S. Apte, MD, PhD, Named Snell Memorial Lecturer at University of Rochester’s Flaum Eye Institute

ST. LOUIS, MO — May 27, 2025 — WashU Medicine Ophthalmology and Visual Science’s Rajendra S. Apte, MD, PhD, Paul A. Cibis Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair of Innovation and Translation, has been named the 2025 Snell Memorial Lecturer at the University of Rochester’s Flaum Eye Institute.

Apte delivered his keynote address on May 23, 2025 during the prestigious Rochester Ophthalmology Conference, an annual event that convenes top experts to explore advances in eye care and vision research. His lecture, titled “Aging, Inflammation, and Metabolic Processes Involved in AMD Pathogenesis and the Development of Novel Treatments,” examined the intricate biological processes that contribute to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the path toward more effective therapies.

“It was an incredible honor to deliver the 69th Snell Memorial lecture at Flaum Eye Institute at University of Rochester and discuss the cutting-edge research at the John F. Hardesty, MD Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at WashU Medicine.” said Apte.

An internationally respected leader in retinal disease research, Apte’s work has shaped current understanding of the immune and metabolic factors driving AMD. His contributions have opened doors to innovative strategies targeting the root causes of this vision-threatening condition.
